Many East Asian nations are about to have their Lunar New Year’s parties. In China, Japan,
and others, they will welcome the Year of the Rabbit. But in Vietnam, it will be the Year of the Cat.
There is no clear explanation for why the Vietnamese chose the cat instead of the rabbit, but there are
some good ideas.
Ngo Huong Giang, an East Asian language expert, said one reason might be that the word in
Mandarin for "Year of the Rabbit" sounds similar to the Vietnamese word for cat.
